As with all communities history takes the form of the interaction of many dimensions. In our area it is important to be aware of geography and topography. The area contained excellent water resources and good farm land. The elevation provided by "the heights" encouraged those seeking fresh air. Proximity to the Patapsco river was also important. As the region developed transportation routes provide another dimension. River, Roadways, Railways and Highways tied our community to Linthicum Heights, Baltimore and places beyond. Often developments caused by transportation link our communities rather than separate them. The railway for example caused mirror image development on either side of the tracks. Likewise both communities in the agricultural period benefited from roadways utilized by the trucks to get crops to market. Both Linthicum and North Linthicum shared technological development as well as the growing inventory of architectural styles. These are other dimensions of importance. Once one defines the variables of each dimension over time history can be animated just as individual slides aid artists to bring cartoons to life. At times one layer will be brighter while at other times another layer will gain in importance. When we construct the whole picture we can then realize how individual communities have chosen to place their own personal stamp upon the history. Good sources of water and a range of topographical features made the area an ideal location for Native American activities of many kinds. As colonists arrived the river continued to play a major role as farms were laid out and transportation routes perfected. Linthicum grew as a transportation intersection in the midst of farmland. Later truck farms operated and the railroad came through town unnaturally separating Linthicum Heights from North Linthicum. As rail transportation developed so too did the residential housing stock. The old farm houses were soon accompanied by Italianate homes of the 20s and the Sears homes of the turn of the century. A row of bungalows were built on the lake which was later drained. The war years brought more commuters with the second world war ending in a construction boom which saw the establishment of North Linthicum of a Cape Cod suburb. In the 60s and 70s the remaining space was consumed by ranchers and split levels making the architectural inventory complete. The lifeblood of the community as a commuter "bedroom" was given a boost with the arrival of the Baltimore Light Rail system. This energy has resulted in the infilling of vacant lots leaving few vacant. Commuters now travel between North Linthicum and Washington D.C. via mass transit and automobile. The location which has dominated the area from Prehistoric times continues to exert an influence. As residences age trees have returned providing a good contrast with the cold cityscapes in which our residents work. The cities however, are near enough to provide recreational opportunities. Baseball and Football mobilize our residents with big crowds traveling to sporting events. Others take advantage of the rich cultural scene present in Baltimore attending concerts and visiting art museums. As North Linthicum is now involved in an infrastructure re-birth following the installation of many new curbs, roads and sidewalks perhaps the time is right for the addition of a few local cultural monuments or institutions which might work to strengthen the identity of the community.
