Unionist Art from Ulster
Generally when one thinks of contempoary art of the Island of Ireland one thinks of art produced in the republic. This art tends to be anti-British and reflects often a return to the Nationalism inspired by the ancient Celtic peoples. Within the Unionist communities of Northern Ireland art of a very different nature is produced. This is an art which portrays Britain and the values of the British Democracy and Culture in a more positive light. Art always gives strength to the aspirations of a people. I would not endorse all of its messages myself but, I do think that art of all kinds is worthy of interest and can be enjoyed on many levels. Let me know if you know of any more examples of art from the unionist community which is worthy of greater exposure. mail me Ulster Postcard Art Unionist Wall Murals-Belfast Contemporary Cartoon Art Back to the Irish Studies Pages
