Lighting up the Night! The
true spirit of the holiday!
From the days of the earliest bonfire
celebrations of the day the focal point was the warmth of fire in the cold
of November and the light of the fireworks and torches. The fires meant
free heating provided by the local parish or city or aristocrat. When dark
would descend on those too poor to keep light going into the night this
was a special time where light and heat for warmth as well as for cooking
was free for all. Often bonfires were held outside the doors of the patrons
who dispensed the other warmth- alcohol along with the fire. It is difficult
for us in the 20-21st century to realize the wonder of the gift of Bonfire.
So it continues in this Victorian Card and into the present. There is just
something special about a bonfire in November and sparklers lighting up
the first dark month.
