Queen Anne (Artist:Adrian Vanson 1595)

Queen Anne
Born Oct. 14, 1574.
From Denmark. Her Mother was Sophia of Mecklenburg. Her father was King Frederick II of Denmark. Graceful, blonde, beautiful. When James came to the throne she had already borne five children- three had survived and she was pregnant again. Anne would have a total of 8 children. In a poem James called her his Juno "the sweet doctor who could hea his heavy heart".  She had a slight giddyness of character but was well loved by the people and was skilled in the role of queen. Brought up a Lutheran she converted to Catholicism in her 20s. This event occured between 1600 and March 1603 in a secret room in the palace.  She corresponded with Pope Clement VIII as early as 1601. Her confessor was the Jesuit Father Robert Abercromby.Anne's best friend was the Countess of Bedford.  Anne enjoyed dancing in masques and patronized the architect Indigo Jones who designed a palace for her at Greenwich. She commissioned works by Ben Johnson  and Robert Spencer.  Anne personified the genuine tolerance of James I.
At the time of the plot her living children were: Charles, Elizabeth and Henry.  Anne and her children were to have been victims of the plot in one way or the other. Anne attended the trial of the plotters but not the trial of the Jesuit Henry Garnet.  Anne died March 4 1619.
