Images of Commemoration
and Thanksgiving
While early this
commemorative piece is much more allegorical and commemorative than the
discovery images which seem to be more religious in nature- almost Icons.
These pieces were commissioned to glorify the individuals involved-
the King and his heirs- rather than the mystery
of the deliverance itself. Here
we see deliverance from the plot as a sign of the suitability of the monarch.
Soon after the event itself the incident has been crafted into a valuable
tool by politicians- a source of patronage for artists and, a lesson
for all of the people. They addressed the concern that the great deliverance
would be forgotten and that Catholics might once again exert influence
from abroad.
