The Devil Leading Guy Fawkes- A contemporary image.

This contemporary Dutch print  shows the relationship between the bomb  site in the cellar and the Parliament (actually shown as what was known as the Star Chamber rather than the  main Parliament  building) The buildings in the background are a bit  Dutch looking. The devils which are encouraging Guy to do the deed are of interest as is the Angel looking out presumably for the country and Parliament. Quite a technical approach to the issue. Note that Fawkes is inspired by the devil and is dressed like a courtier. His face is not the mask concept- just a man with a beard.

  About the  Image:
A Dutch Print: Contemporary Image A portion of a composite picture. (British Museum, Political and Personal Satires, 63) John Garard writes in : What was the Gunpowder Plot: On the right being represented the catastrophe known as the "Blackfriars Downfall." On Sunday, October 26 th 1623, many Catholics having assembled in an upper room of the French ambassador's house, in Blackfriars, to hear a sermon from the Jesuit, Father Drury, the floor collapsed, and manhy, including the preacher were killed. As October 26th,N.S, Corresponded to November 5th OS, it was ingeniously discove red that the accident was menat to signalize Gunpowder Plot day, th ough this fell on November 5th OS, or November 15th, NS. The Parliament House is represented by a nondescript edifice, the wall of which is par tially removed, showing King James and some of the Peers. An oven-like vault beneath represents the "cellar," well stored with barrels, which Faukes is preparing to light with a torch fanned by a crowned fiend with a pair of bellows. Acompany of halberdiers approaches under the guidance of an angel. In the background is a royal funeral procession.
