The Bonfire- The Ritual of the 11th Night

Children gathering everything burnable, large pyres reaching into the sky right in the city! The time for fires is the night before the 12th of July on the 11th-A time when the men go out and celebrate...

A communal effort-gathering the materials then gathering round the fire. A source of contemplation in its many colors and mystery, warmth in the cool of the evening -a place to cook potatoes and dinner- sweet snacks. The company of other Celebrants and the stories of celebrations past and of the legends of King Billy and talk of preparations for the next days march and procession.

What is it about a Bonfire ? It is a custom practiced throughout Europe for celebrations and is popular for the celebration of Celtic holidays- Midsummer and Halloween. In England bonfires celebrate Guy Fawkes Day on the 5th of November.Go to the Guy Fawkes day Pages to learn more! The warmth and the light kindle the flames of solidarity and bring out the conversations.

Could anyone supply the anatomy of a good Bonfire for 11th night? How should it be stacked-lighted-tended? What should you have for the assembled celebrants-foods drink?-Games? Let us know via the e. mail link or on the Guest Book in the Main Page.

We in America have sold out to the interests of big business.
To get them to do their moral duty and clean the air of their smoke we have been forced to abandon all of our small fires as if they were an ecological menace! Write in of your bonfires past and present. There is still hope for us-in some areas (Maryland) fires in containers are permitted if they are used for cooking! We always have a cook out then throw some e larger wood On! What do you do...? Always be save but do not give up your customs and traditions!
